Today we got a patch from Sho Hosoda that add back the Windows XP SP2 support to Heimdal PK-INIT support. With this we can use smart cards to logins a Samba4 domain, this is way cool and why we started this work several years ago.

PKINIT, or Public Key Cryptography for Initial Authentication in Kerberos, is a powerful authentication mechanism that enhances security in Kerberos-based environments. When implemented with Samba4 and Windows XP, PKINIT provides a robust solution for securing authentication processes. By leveraging public key cryptography, PKINIT enables secure mutual authentication between clients and servers, mitigating the risk of unauthorized access and credential theft. This integration allows organizations to maintain compatibility with legacy systems such as Windows XP while benefiting from advanced security features provided by PKINIT, making it a valuable addition to any Samba4 environment seeking to bolster authentication security.
